Start with how much wood grain you want to see. Transparent and semi-transparent stains preserve more natural variation; opaque finishes create a more uniform colour. The existing coating and wood condition help determine which options are realistic.
A previously opaque finish may need substantial removal before a transparent look is possible. Is stain or paint better for a deck?
Neither is universally better. Penetrating stains tend to wear gradually, while film-forming products provide a more opaque look but may peel if moisture or preparation is poor.
Does the deck need pressure washing?
Many decks benefit from cleaning, but pressure must be controlled to avoid damaging wood fibres. Some surfaces also need sanding or stripping.
How dry must wood be?
The wood must be within the product’s acceptable moisture range. Weather, shade, board thickness and recent washing all affect drying.
Can you stain over an existing product?
Only when the new product is compatible and the existing coating is sound. Unknown, glossy or failing products may need removal.
